College of Nursing Science (CNS), Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Barnawa, Kaduna.

INTRODUCTION

The institution was established in 1978 by Kaduna State Government. Training started in 1979 with only nine students under the pioneer principal, Late Mr J.M Ugorah. Initially the programme was for three (3) years Basic Psychiatric Nursing, but today the programme is for eighteen months, splitted into three (3) semesters; Post basic Mental Health / Psychiatric Nursing Programme. Presently the School trains seventy five (75) students per academic session.

In the year 2025 the School nomenclature changed from School of Post Basic Psychiatric Nursing (SOPBPN) to College of Nursing Science (CNS), Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing programme. The Institution is the first psychiatric nursing school in the North.

The programme is for registered nurses but also trains students from schools of nursing, midwife and CHEWs on the aspect of psychiatric nursing.

The institution for years has been producing competent and skilled psychiatric nurses for both in and outside the country. The institution is per academic excellence.
