The school of Post Basic Psychiatric Nursing Kaduna was established within the hospital premises in 1978 initially as a 3 year basic psychiatric Nursing programme.  It was later changed to a Post Basic Psychiatric Nursing programme in 1984 as a 12 months programme, commencement of 18 months programme training has been on since 2006 till date.

Between 2018 and 2020, the management of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Kaduna (FNPH) has impacted positively on the school under the dynamic leadership of Prof. A. J. Yusuf.

Human capacity development

As at 2020 the school staff strength is twenty-three (23), eleven (11) academic, seven non-academic staff and four (4) compound cleaners.

One (1) Clinical instructor was engaged in 2019 to boost clinical teaching.  four (4) academic staff were sent to various institutions for human capacity building in relevant specialties ranging from BNSC and PGD. Some were promoted in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The School is resolute about maintaining Nursing Council standard in education and the performance of our students over the years has been outstanding, no wonder our students are found all over the world.

Equipment procured

In its quest to further maintain of the school’s goal, objectives and standard, the present administration procured new books for the Library, bought reading tables and chairs, installed wardrobes in the hostel as well as intercom for easy communication.

In addition, recently, the ICT Center of the School has been furnished with modern ICT Equipment and many electric gadgets to give the school a facelift. The classrooms, hostels were painted and toilets were refurbished.

Service delivery

We train Nurses that will promote Mental Health, Prevent/Treat Mental Illness and Rehabilitate those with Mental Disabilities using a more dynamic and comprehensive problems solving approach.

We also provide Psychiatric/Mental Health experience to students from schools of Nursing/Midwifery and Schools of Health Technologies. 

Structural development

In 2019, the management of FNPH Kaduna under the dynamic leadership of Prof. A. J. Yusuf constructed a two-room classroom block with three (3) staff offices, ready for commissioning. Also, a story building hostel en suite is under construction.

This short period of Prof. A. J. Yusuf’s administration style has been positively eventful and is a pointer to what we expect from him in the coming years.
