HISTORY OF FEDERAL NEURO-PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL KADUNA.

The Hospital came into existence in 1975 when it was then known as the PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL KAKURI, at that time, it was a 100-bed health facility owned and managed by the KADUNA STATE GOVERNMENT. A Consultant Psychiatrist, DR. M. H AHMED was the visiting consultant who used to pay twice-weekly visits to the hospital.

In 1975, the hospital got an Egyptian named DR. ISKANDER as its consultant Psychiatrist. The hospital later started a school of Psychiatric Nursing with MR. UJORA as it principal in 1978. He formally with the Psychiatry department of A.B.U. as an instructor in Psychiatry to the nurses in the school of nursing of the Teaching Hospital, school of nursing Abuja, and that of Wusasa Mission Hospital.

Between 1988 and 1996, several doctors joined the state psychiatric Hospital as Medical officers. These were Doctors I.S. BAKA, S.A. LUBO, SHOROUNMU and YENGE.

Dr. Yenge eventually left for Psychiatric hospital Aro in 1989 before traveling abroad on sponsorship, while Dr. Shorunmu left for Australia after becoming a senior registrar.

When Dr. Iskander left in 1991, Dr. Baka took over the running of the hospital as the Medical Officer in-charge. After consideration of reports on psychiatric practice in Nigeria, the Federal Government took over the running of 5 state-owned psychiatric facilities in different parts of the country, namely Enugu, Calabar, Maiduguri, Sokoto, and Kaduna. These were in addition to the existing 3 Federal Psychiatric \Hospitals (i.e. Yaba, Aro and Uselu).

Consequent upon the take-over of the Psychiatric hospital in Kaduna by the Federal Government in 1996, Professor M. H. Ahmed became the Medical Director and was equally doubling as the Head of the department of Psychiatry at ABUTH, Kaduna.

At this time, the name of the hospital became known as the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna.

Dr. G.T Suleiman joined the services of the hospital in December 1996. In 2001, he took over from Professor Ahmed as the Medical Director of the Hospital. He was alone as a consultant Psychiatrist in the hospital till November, 2002 when he was joined by Dr. S. O. Adeyemi. They were later joined but Dr. A. B Adeponle in 2004 and Dr. G.O Oju in 2007. Dr. Adeponle left the services of the hospital in January 2007. In 2008, Dr. N. W. Ebiti and Dr. F. T. Nuhu joined the services of the hospital as consultant Psychiatrists.

In April 2009, Dr. N. U. Ekele became the first resident doctor to be fully trained to the status of a Fellow Psychiatrist by the hospital. He is still awaiting confirmation by the Board of Management as a consultant psychiatrist.

  1. T. L. SHEIKH joined the hospital from A.B.U. in March 2010 as the Medical Director. He holds the position to this day

1975:             Establishment of the Hospital as Psychiatric Hospital Kakuri  with 100 beds    under Kaduna state government.

1978:             school of psychiatric nursing was established with MR UJORA as it principal.

1988 – 1996: Dr I.S. BAKA, S.A LUBA,SHOROUNMU &YENGE Joined the Hospital.

1989:             DR YANGE left psychiatric Hospital as Medical officer to P.H ARO while DR SHORUNMU left for Australia after becoming Senior Registrar.

1991:             DR BAKA took over the mantle of leadership after DR ISKANDAR left as Medical Officer in charge.

1991:             The Hospital became Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital after the Federal Government took over 5 states owned Psychiatric Facilities in different part of the country, namely Enugu, Calabar, Maiduguri, Sokoto and Kaduna.

1991:             Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital became eight with addition to the existing 3 Federal Psychiatric Hospital (Yaba, Aro and Uselu)

1996:             Professor M.H AHMED became the first Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital.

1996:             The Hospital became known as FEDERAL NEURO-PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL (F.N.P.H) Barnawa, Kaduna

1996:             DR G.T SULEMAN joined the senior of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (F.N.P.H) Barnawa, Kaduna.

2001:             Professor G.T.SULEMAN became the Medical Director Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital after he took over from Professor AHMED

2002-            DR S.O.ADEYEMI joined the services of the Hospital

2004–            DR A.B ADEPONLE joined the services of the Hospital.

2007-            DR. G.O.OJU joined the services of the Hospital.

2007-            DR ADEPONLE left the services of the Hospital.

2008-             DR N.W. EBITI joined the services of the Hospital.

2008-            DR NUHU F.T. (Consultant) joined as consultant Psychiatric.

2009-             N.U EKELE was the first trained Psychiatric consultant by the Hospital

2010-             became the Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Kaduna.
